Movie Clips | Movie Clips: Aronofsky’s New Movie Explores World Of Ballet
Ticket prices this year are averaging $7.88, according to the National Association of Theatre Owners. That’s up 38 cents, or 5%, from 2009.
Speaking of the summer movie season, critics are weighing in this week on the artistic merits of what we’ve been watching on the big screen since May.
Bill Goodykoontz, chief film critic for Gannett News Service, offers this list of hits and misses.
• “Toy Story 3″: “A fitting ending to what is, with apologies to ‘Lord of the Rings’ fans, probably the greatest trilogy ever.”
• “The Last Airbender”: “This thing was a mess, made worse by after-the-fact 3D. … Based on a cartoon, which has a lot more humanity than the live-action version.”
• “Inception”: “It’s a great movie, one that twists your brain into a pretzel, and it’s also a movie that people talked about afterward. … If we care enough to argue, that’s a good thing.”
• “Scott Pilgrim vs. the World”: “At least judging from its status as a trending Twitter topic, it should have done boffo business at the box office. But no. It was a flop of the first order, leaving wags to wonder whether Michael Cera’s charm as a lovable slug might be wearing thin.”
• Small movies: ” ‘ Winter’s Bone ‘ is probably the best movie of the year so far. … ‘ Get Low ‘ has another one of the best performances of the year, courtesy of Robert Duvall, and a really good supporting turn from Bill Murray. ‘ Restrepo ‘ was a harrowing real-life look at a year in the lives of soldiers fighting in the most-dangerous spot in Afghanistan. ‘ Solitary Man ‘ gave Michael Douglas his best role in years, and one of the best of his career.”
• “Sex and they City 2″: “An ugly, arrogant mess, completely tone deaf to life as most people currently live it. Shudder. Worst movie of the year. So far, anyway.”
